ATCO Electric Drumheller Administration & Operations Centre
Drumheller, Alberta
ATCO Electric has made substantial investments in its regional infrastructure buildings which primarily house office and administrative functions.
This 70,940 sf. (6,590 m
2) structure is divided by a main central corridor that brings natural light into the centre of the building, while creating a shared space that is equally accessible from each department. The central corridor also divides the building functions, with strictly office areas located on the northwest side and filtering down to the southeast end of the building which houses the more industrial areas such as the maintenance garage.
The exterior of the building utilizes efficient rectilinear forms for both the office areas and the vehicle bays. These form the backdrop for architectural elements that slice into the building and mark the main pedestrian entry points for both staff and public.
The Drumheller project has unique site features that impacted the design and site planning process. While ATCO owns a sizable property, half of the site was not usable for construction. The site for the joint administration and operations warehouse building is set into a coulee. Through our work with the development authority, the construction team was able to level additional portions of the site to provide the space and flexibility required to collocate the administration and operations/maintenance departments. Construction of this $21.1 million facility is underway and expected to be completed in December 2015.
