Kearl Oil Sands Administration & Operations Complex
Fort McMurray, Alberta
Located 70 km north of Fort McMurray is the Kearl Oil Sands project, jointly owned between Imperial Oil (operator) and ExxonMobil Canada. As one of Canada's highest-quality oil sands deposits, it has an estimated 4.6 billion barrels of recoverable bitumen resources, which will help meet North America's energy needs for the next 40 years. Kearl represents the next generation of oil sands mining projects, with a priority to develop and incorporate new technologies that significantly enhance environmental performance in the extraction process.
The new 91,452 sf. (8,496 m
2) Kearl Oil Sands Mission Critical Administration and Operations Complex is part of this ambition. It is comprised of three buildings: Central Control 10,818 sf. (1,005 m
2), Laboratory 10,107 sf. (939 m
2), and the Administration Complex 70,527 sf. (6,552 m
2). The $45 million complex was critical to forming the basis of this oil sands facility's ability to initiate operations. Phased construction of these buildings, which are linked by heated corridors, allowed the Control Centre to be 'test-ready' and functional while the other buildings were completed. Construction was completed in 2012.
