Calgary Immigrant Educational Society
In an effort to help newcomers and economically disadvantaged people find their feet in Canadian Society, the Calgary Immigrant Educational Society (CIES) provides education, multimedia information, a job bank, and referral services. It also offers various levels of E.S.L courses, employment counselling, computer and accounting training, and entry-level job training.
SAHURI designed the elegant 15,059 sf. building to accommodate the necessary classrooms, training rooms, meeting areas, and administrative support spaces for this very busy not-for-profit agency. The simple, elementary form purposefully creates more volume internally, and the external linear aspects draw interest and focus to the building and its mission.
We used a traditional and intentional approach in utilizing lower-level masonry and veneer accents which grounds the structure and emphasizes a feeling of home and permanence. The upper-level metal cladding was selected for its durability and economy, and directs focus to the front glass façade that faces west for optimal daylight exposure.
Proud red and white accents on the exterior reference Canada and its flag, welcoming immigrants to their new home away from home. Construction was completed on time and within the $4 million budget in April 2012.
