The Riley Park Band Shell was a simple concrete slab situated within Riley Park, in northwest Calgary. The goal was to create a permanent band shell, while staying within a limited budget.
As part of the design process, SAHURI worked with City of Calgary Parks Planning and Cultural Landscape Conservation to create a structure that would continue the history of the band shell in Calgary, but in a contemporary way. Budget considerations, permanence, and CPTED principles all influenced the final design.
SAHURI devised a glulam structure, anchored in a new concrete foundation. This simple, yet elegant solution is durable to withstand harsh Calgary winters and summers, while protecting the band societies and other users from the outdoor elements.
Construction was completed in May, 2018
