Rotary Challenger Park Jim & Pearl Burns Centre
Calgary, Alberta
With a vision to provide accessible sport and recreational facilities where everyone can play regardless of their age or ability, Rotary Challenger Park is the first of its kind in North America. This barrier free recreational facility is universally accessible to all, featuring two ball diamonds, a soccer field, an eight-lane running track, a specialized playground, tennis and basketball courts, and exercise equipment areas.
Designed by SAHURI, the 8,073 sf. Jim & Pearl Burns Centre is the focal point of the park, housing the park administration, conference and storage facilities, a multipurpose room, cafeteria, and designated space for the Renfrew Educational Services Pre-School Program.
The competition winning design opens up the basement with a ramp that wraps the inner circumference of the building, opening up another level of entry. Large cafeteria windows open onto the main plaza, which blurs the barriers between interior and exterior space, providing views of park activities and, on a clear day, the Rocky Mountains beyond the City.
With an objective to maintain dignity and privacy, the washrooms are uniquely designed with people of all levels of disabilities in mind.
