Calgary, Alberta
U of C's Kinesiology buildings sit in the heart of the main campus and altogether cover about 452,080 sf. The Complex is open 362 days a year and serves about two million people per year. It houses the Olympic Oval, five gyms, two dance studios, a 50 meter competition swimming pool, two combative rooms, two weight rooms, an aerobic studio, yoga studio, 15 classrooms and lecture halls, a 200 meter indoor running track, a gymnastics centre, 13 squash courts, nine racquetball courts, seven outdoor playing fields, an outdoor artificial turf field hockey pitch, three outdoor sand volleyball courts, an outdoor hard-court surface, the Roger Jackson Health & Wellness Research Centre, the Outdoor Centre, and office space for the Faculty of Kinesiology.
Between 2011 and 2012, SAHURI + Partners, in association with Diamond Schmitt Architects, worked closely with University staff to analyze, assess, and meet the programming needs for a 322,971 sf. Kinesiology Complex Expansion & Renewal project. We provided facility assessment, schematic programming, master planning and conceptual design work in preparation for the renewal.
Phase I included the development of long term strategies for effective space utilization during the expansion and renovation. In Phase I, we also established a basis for the fund development required to support the project.
The Final Report integrates structures within the campus and service infrastructure, such as parking, circulation, loading, and storm water management. The project also included careful assessments of the Complex's 50 meter competition pool, as well as the Olympic Oval.
