Calgary Region Central Pharmacy
Calgary, Alberta
The Central Pharmacy complex was developed to meet a growing need for centralized pharmacological support in the Calgary Region. This one-of-a-kind facility concentrates pharmacy services from four acute care hospitals in Calgary into one building.
The $3.1 million Pharmacy, completed in 2005, was the culmination of many years of planning on the part of pharmacy directors at each hospital. Now local hospitals depend on it as a supplier for the majority of their medication needs. Direct electronic connections to each hospital ensure individual patient needs are filled and shipped on a daily basis.
The layout of this 42,000 sf. project accommodates the main production facility, administrative office space, and support facilities. The main production component moves medication from receipt and bulk storage, through to production, packaging, and distribution of final patient requirements.
Through close collaboration and carefully crafted solutions, we resolved a number of challenging issues during the design process, including setting apart designated areas for site security and staff, ensuring dependable electronic communications capabilities for timely delivery to each hospital, and the complications involved in retrofitting a warehouse into a sterile environment. The design team included staff members from the Central Pharmacy, which proved highly effective in resolving planning and design issues.
