Projects: Health & Wellness
Children & Family Research Diagnostic Imaging Facility
Vancouver, British Columbia
This facility, completed in 2012, is devoted primarily to the health of women, newborns, and families of all circumstances, and provides a range of specialized health services. A priority of this $4 million project was to create a functional facility that really focused on varied patient needs - from premature babies and babies on ventilators, to non-sedated children and healthy pregnant mothers.
SAHURI + Partners had a unique opportunity in designing the new Children & Family Research Imaging Facility at the Centre, working with a client group that was committed to building their vision for a research imaging centre and in creating a people-focused facility, not just an MRI building.
As participation at the Centre is voluntary, it was essential that the 4,200 sf. environment was made to be inviting and friendly; a place people would want to come to. All of the different user-groups required special consideration for how they experience the Centre, so patient needs were a primary driver in the design. A second function of the facility is the handling and processing of imaging data. Staff at 12 workstations track the information that is gathered through these tests. They need to simultaneously communicate with MRI technologists, without impeding their ability to work and care for the subjects. This requirement introduced a separate flow of traffic in the design, as well as information that had to be assimilated into the overall operation of the building.
