Calgary Health Region Stryker i-Suite MIORs
Calgary, Alberta
Between 2005 and 2008, SAHURI designed six new Stryker i-Suite MIOR's located at the Foothills Medical Centre (1103.6 sf.), Rockyview General Hospital (970.8 sf.), and the Peter Lougheed Centre (986.5 sf.), at $3.6 million each. The intent was to create operating rooms that maintain the highest level of infection prevention and control, while improving the ergonomics and communication ability of the surgical team.
This renovation project involved the coordination of new Stryker i-Suite surgical equipment, 'air curtain' mechanical systems, communication technology, and improved human ergonomics by taking surgical equipment off the floor. These state-of-the-art voice-activated rooms give surgical teams greater control and contribute towards an optimum operating room work environment.
Voice-command technology allow surgeons to direct functions such as room lighting and digital endoscopic camera angles for use in cross-specialty, minimally invasive surgical procedures, including complex cancer surgery. The system integrates audio and video capabilities for tele-medicine, teleconferencing, and improved surgical precision. The OR's also accommodate advanced surgical technology such as robotics and enhanced image guided systems.
SAHURI's design recognized the need for less clutter in the operating room and for enhanced technology to support surgical procedures. The suites' optimal efficiency positively impacts patient care and enables hospitals to schedule more surgical procedures. Significant benefits include shortened lengths of stay, increased capacity, and the ability to complete complex surgeries using less invasive techniques. The suites are the future model for surgical procedures based on efficiency, communication, and innovation.
