Airdrie Public Library
Airdrie, Alberta
The Airdrie Public Library inherited a unique space formerly occupied by a retail drug store and medical office within an existing strip shopping centre. The design lays out the main library area in the former high ceiling drug store space and the administration/meeting spaces are located in the lower ceilinged former medical office space, which maintains a feeling of openness in the 10,500 sf. library.
The reception area was designed to facilitate book check-in and check-out, as well as to maintain security requirements. Hanging fabric baffles provide visual interest and an acoustic treatment to the exposed structure of the ceiling.
The children’s area was designed as a multi-function space for quiet reading and play. After a $720,000 completion, the project opened its doors in 2005 and has served the Airdrie community not only as a fully-stocked library with over 62,000 items in its collection, but also as a Career Resource Centre.
