Projects: Libraries and Research
Comox Public Library
Comox, British Columbia
As an important cultural and educational hub of Comox, BC, this Vancouver Island Regional Library branch sees staggering usage numbers with well over 100,000 visits per year.
The popular library focuses particularly on helping local seniors with introductory technology classes, while also offering advisory services, reading programs, hobby clubs, author readings, and varied special events for children, teens, and adults.
People with mobility issues were considered in the accessible design and the 5,435 sf. building features a fireplace and lounge area, reference and study areas, offices, and multipurpose spaces with access to public computers and wireless Internet.
Because of its proximity to a much larger branch, the number of items returned each year is extremely high for a branch of this size. For this reason, the efficiency of the book drop and associated check-in function, as well as provision for shipping and receiving areas, was made an important priority.
The $3 million project was completed in 2006 and enriches the community through providing universal access to literacy and lifelong learning.
