Crestwood Affordable Housing
Calgary, Alberta
This 72,333 sf. development provides quality, affordable, multi-family housing for low-income households and those with mobility difficulties in southeast Calgary. We designed this project with a sustainable focus to meet LEED
® Certification, with the intended deliverable of affordability through reducing maintenance costs and resource consumption.
The $13.2 million, four-storey, 60-unit building was completed in 2008, and was initiated jointly by The City of Calgary and Calgary Housing Company. The family-oriented complex houses eight one-bedroom units and 52 two-bedroom units, with eight units being wheelchair-accessible. Heated underground parking leaves room for more external green space and a well-used onsite playground.
Surrounding neighbours were extensively consulted throughout the design process to ensure the Crestwood community would enjoy the positive aesthetic the new building added to the suburb. As a result of this community feedback, extra charm was added to the curb appeal plan including red bricks and trestle details which echo traditional train station elements and the nearby Canadian Pacific Railway yards built in 1912. Those who call Crestwood their home enjoy convenient access to schools, parks, shopping, a community centre, Downtown Calgary, and industrial employment areas.
