Projects: Seniors Living
Central Lions Seniors Recreation Centre
Edmonton, Alberta
Owned and operated by the City of Edmonton Community Services Department, the Central Lions Recreation Centre provides quality recreation and social activities for adults who are 55 years and over.
The facility features a publicly accessible gymnasium and fitness centre with equipment generally designed for seniors' exercise programs, as well as a cafeteria, auditorium, change rooms, and shower facilities. In 2008, SAHURI + Partners developed a bold new plan, in association with Holland Roth Architects, to refit and expand the 40-year-old Centre.
The $15.3 million expansion doubled the facility's capacity, increasing the building size by 80,557 sf. An improved social focus was produced by incorporating outdoor courtyard spaces into new circulation patterns between the auditorium and cafeteria, thereby creating a 'social heart'.
The centre can now provide services to over 120,000 Edmonton-area seniors and other members of the public. The comprehensive renovation influenced a more energy efficient and sustainable building by addressing hazardous materials, as well as the dated and inadequate mechanical and electrical systems.
